Lisbon Training Workshop on Quantum Technologies in Space

Place:
Lisbon (Portugal)
Date:
September 11, 2017

The Training Workshop in Lisbon will cover all topics of the QTSpace COST action on quantum technologies in space, combining tutorials, hands-on training and technical talks from the different stakeholders on their latest developments. In particular, the Workshop will cover talks on the state-of-the-art in the main scientific fields currently involved in efforts towards harnessing quantum technology in space.

The QTSpace COST action brings together a variety of communities from space agencies and industries as well as from the field of quantum technology. The Lisbon Training Workshop aims at establishing a common ground in know-how and expertise in state of the art developments in these diverse fields by providing tutorials on diverse topics like quantum communication in space, quantum-enhanced measurements and the potential of quantum technology to develop novel tests of the foundations of physics. These talks will go hand in hand with hands-on training sessions to make the trainees acquainted with skills central to this unique effort like, e.g., orbital simulations for quantum-communication experiments or other future space missions. This pedagogical setting will set the stage to further the discourse between a wide variety of stake holders in space agencies and space industries as well as scientists from four communities that have been pushing towards space applications of quantum technology in the recent past: (1) atom interferometry, (2) atomic clocks, (3) quantum communication and (4) quantum optomechanics and high-mass matter-wave interferometry. The unique combination of tutorials and a scientific workshop will provide a perfect setting for networking among Early Career Investigators, leading scientists as well as stake holders from space agencies and space industry.

Organisers:
Rainer Kaltenbaek (University of Vienna), Yasser Omar (Instituto Técnico Superior), Eamonn Murphy (European Space Agency), José Manuel Leitao (Instituto Técnico Superior)
