Quantum Photonics Technologies in Space Conference
08 – 12 October 2018, Bern (CH)
The Quantum Photonics Technologies in Space Conference will take place from 8 to 12 October 2018 at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Going to space is the natural extension to experiments involving the distribution of quantum states of light. Not only the range of quantum communication can be extended over intercontinental scales, but also entanglement can be tested in conditions inaccessible on the ground. The development of such experiments could greatly benefit from the recent advances in classical photonics technologies for space. Conversely, the latest developments of quantum technologies could improve classical methods. The goal of the conference is to cover a wide range of topics related to the transmission of quantum and classical light in space, to bring together those various communities and to identify overlaps not only from a technological side but also from a theoretical perspective. The conference covers the following topics:
Theory
- Tests of relativity with quantum states of light
- Theoretical investigation of the relation between entanglement and gravity
- Optical quantum metrology for space experiments
Free-space experiments with quantum states of light
- Discrete and continuous variable quantum communication / Quantum key distribution
- Experimental entanglement distribution
Classical photonics technologies in space
- Free space optical communications
- Optical time and frequency transfer
- Satellite laser ranging and laser altimetry
- Optical sensing

3rd workshop on “Quantum Technology – Implementations for Space” – ESTEC
20-21 November 2018, Noordwijk (NL)
ESTEC, the European Space Research and Technology Centre of ESA, will host the 3rd workshop on “Quantum Technology – Implementations for Space” in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, on 20-21 November 2018.
The purpose of the workshop is to follow on to last year’s workshop and for ESA to identify possible areas of collaboration for the implementation of Quantum Technologies in space with the Quantum Technology commercialisation programmes that have recently emerged within the ESA member states.
The workshop will focus on the progress made since last year. In particular, highlight are on:
- New initiatives
- New collaborations
- New goals, new strategic developments
- New technical developments
- Emerging markets, both commercial and institutional
The following topics have been identified:
I. Applications
- Secure communications
- Time and frequency distribution
- Earth and Planetary remote sensing
- Fundamental Physics
II. Programmatics
- Commercialisation
- Policy
A link to the registration website will be sent out shortly. The workshop is proudly sponsored by
- ESA Directorate of Earth Observation (http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth)
- COST Action QTSpace (http://www.qtspace.eu/)
and is organised in collaboration with the COST Action QTSpace.
