WG2: Applications

Leader:

Vice Leader:

Recent progress in space technology has rendered space a promising platform for harnessing quantum technology for novel applications as well as for tests on the foundations of physics. This progress has been paralleled by impressive developments in several fields of quantum technology, in particular: atom interferometry, atomic clocks, optical quantum communication, high-mass matter-wave interferometry and quantum optomechanics.

Atom interferometers and atomic clocks have become versatile tools for high-precision metrology in ground-based experiments, and these technologies promise further advances in high-precision metrology for space-based applications.

Optical quantum communication promises ultra-secure quantum key distribution and the establishment of global quantum networks.

High-mass matter-wave interferometry promises the design of novel tests on the foundations of physics as well as a potential further improvement to high-sensitivity metrology.

Quantum optomechanics aims at pushing optical interferometry to its ultimate performance limits, reaching out to gravitational-wave detection. It also promises to find applications in quantum-information processing, e.g., in quantum sensing, quantum memories and quantum transducers.

Harnessing such novel developments in a space environment promises to lead to a host of novel space-based applications in quantum technology.

WG2 will investigate the potential of quantum technology for future space-based applications.  We will identify potential applications besides fundamental tests of physics, and will aim at establishing links to industrial partners for future implementations of space-based technology.

WG2 will work towards establishing a feasible roadmap from proof-of-principle demonstrations to future applications, and will investigate the need of society and industry for quantum technology in space.
